State of the Blog: October 2012

For the next week or so, posting here at True Classics will be somewhat sporadic (damn real life–always getting in the way of blogging). And because of that, we overshot our typical “first of the month” announcement post. But here ’tis now, chock full of five-days-late announcements and general information about the month to come here on the blog …

As you might have guessed from our regular Saturday Morning Cartoons feature, our recurring salute to the “Pioneers of Animation,” and our recent celebration of the centennial of Chuck Jones’ birth, we are a little loony for ‘toons here (if you’ll pardon my punning). And on October 21st, TCM will be featuring a night chock-full of classic and rare animated gems, ranging from the brilliant 1926 Lotte Reiniger fairy tale The Adventures of Prince Achmed to the two full-length Max Fleischer features we told you about last week, as well as a number of UPA beauties (The Unicorn in the Garden! Gerald McBoing-Boing!) and a selection of silent animations, including a bit of “lightning sketching” with J. Stuart Blackton.

To say I am excited about this is an understatement. And to add to my utter and complete joy, I will be hosting my very first TCM Party on Twitter throughout the night on the 21st! If you’ve ever participated in one of these shindigs, using the now-ubiquitous #TCMparty hashtag, you know that the commentary ranges from insightful to snarky, and the discussion is never anything less than entertaining. And if you haven’t … well, it’s easy to chime in–just append the #TCMparty hashtag to your tweets throughout the evening to contribute to the fun! I hope you’ll all join me that night and share the love for these amazing classic animated works.

The results of the Classic Movie Blog Association’s annual CiMBA Awards were announced today and have been posted over on the Association’s blog. We were thrilled to receive two nominations this year (for Best Profile of a Classic Movie Performer or Filmmaker for our profile of Pluto, and for Best Classic Movie Discussion for our post on the WTFery-filled musical bonbon Cinderella Jones). Though neither of our nominations resulted in a win (some of you must not have received your complimentary bribe gift box of Godiva chocolates), we are pleased that some of our favorite blogs and great blogging buddies were honored with recognition this year. Congratulations to all of the winners! [And a great "thank you!" to Lara of Backlots, who organized this year's awards, and quite splendidly, too!]

If you are not a member of the CMBA, make sure to remedy that by applying for membership when the window opens once more in January.

Miscellany:

  • The Wonders in the Dark Comedy Countdown continues to roll on steadily; I’ll be contributing another piece later this month, as well as one at the beginning of November. Some truly excellent films have been featured thus far, and we’re really getting into the good stuff now, with entries on such hilarious classics as Arsenic and Old Lace and Adam’s Rib being posted this week, among others. Make sure to check out this series every weekday, as new articles are posted!
  • I posted a couple of new DVD reviews on Cinema Sentries over the past month; more to come in October. (Can I just add how much I have enjoyed contributing to this great site? I get to review not only my beloved classics, but more contemporary things, too, like kick-ass documentaries about things that tickle my nerdy heart. Squee!)
  • Congratulations to Ruth from Silver Screenings, who won our drawing for two Looney Tunes DVD compilations during our Chuck Jones-athon last month! Also, congrats to our six winners of Lawrence of Arabia and E.T. tickets last week; we hope all of you enjoyed your respective shows. (And thanks again to Pure Brand for allowing us to host another ticket giveaway.)

For now … that’s all, y’all!

We feel pretty! (And witty!) (And gay!)

We just found out that we won two CiMBA awards from the Classic Movie Blog Association! This calls for a tiny Kermit dance.

Yaaaaaaaaaay!

We were awarded the prizes for Best Classic Movie Event (for the Loving Lucy Blogathon) and for Best Profile of a Classic Movie Performer or Filmmaker (for Celebrating Women in Classic Film: The Silent Directors)!

Congratulations to ALL of the deserving winners and the fabulous array of nominees! And thanks to every single one of our readers,  because y’all make this whole blogging thing way too much fun.

We also want to give a sincere “thanks a bajillion!” to everyone who voted for us. I know I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating–CMBA is home to some of the best film bloggers on the web, and we’re so glad to be a part of the crew.

Many, many thanks.

The gang here at True Classics was thrilled to learn that we have been nominated for five CiMBA awards from the Classic Movie Blog Association!

The nominated posts are:

Best Film Review (Drama): “I’m an advertising man, not a red herring.”
Best Classic Movie Article: Censorship and a Streetcar, Part I and Part II.
Best Profile of a Classic Movie Performer or Filmmaker: Celebrating Women in Classic Film: The Silent Directors.
Best Classic Movie Blog Event: The Loving Lucy Blogathon
Best Classic Movie Discussion: We’re diggin’ Disney.

The results will be announced in two weeks, on October 17th.

We are honored beyond belief to have been recognized alongside some of our favorite classic movie bloggers on the web. Congratulations to ALL of the deserving nominees!

CiMBA.

We here at True Classics are honored to be nominated for a 2010 CiMBA award from the Classic Movie Blog Association!

There are quite a few amazing classic movie blogs out there, and many of them belong to CMBA. So, needless to say, we are proud to be members of this great crew, and proud to be nominated among so many great writers!

Here’s a link to our nominated post (in the category Best Classic Movie Article), which was written by Brandie back in July: In defense of Scarlett O’Hara.

If you are a CMBA member, we welcome your vote and thank you for stopping by and spreading the love of classic film (it’s like a disease, only funner and less stomach-churningly disgusting)! And if you’re not yet a member … well, why not??? Take care of that immediately:)
